What happens when a solid double brick wall becomes a barrier instead of a feature? That is where this renovation project begins. We installed a new door into an existing double brick wall during a larger home extension. This change improved how the space connects to the outside and increeses the flow of the home.
Planning
Before we used any tools, the first step was planning. Working with double brick means dealing with a structural element, not just a partition. Load distribution, wall stability, and compliance with Australian building standards are all impotant. Engineering input was essential here. Load paths were assessed and a suitable lintel specification was confirmed to support the opening safely. Safety compliance was followed in line with structural guidelines and site regulations to ensure the wall remained stable during and after the cut.
Marking and Cutting the Opening
Once everything was approved, we marked the exact door opening. Accuracy matters here. Even a small deviation can create issues later when fitting the door frame. The brickwork was cut carefullly using a masonry saw to create clean and straight lines. The top section was supported first, then the bricks were removed section by section.
Structural Support
With the opening formed, the next step was installing the lintel. This componant carries the weight of the wall above the new door. It was positioned precisely and packed correctly to ensure full load transfer. This part is critical. Without proper support, cracks and movement can develop over time. Once secured, the surrounding brickwork was cleaned and prepared for the frame installation.
Door Frame and Finishing Works
The door frame was installed square and level, anchored into the double brick structure. Getting this right ensures smooth door operation and long term durability. After that, the surrounding edges were patched and prepared for finishing. The transformation at this stage becomes obvius. What was once a solid wall now acts as a functional access point connecting the interior space to the outside timber deck area.
Integration with the Renovation and Extension
This door installation was a small part of a much larger renovation and extension project, but it had a major impact. It improved natural light, ventilation, and usability of the space. The home now feels more open and connected. The new door creates a seamless transition to the timber deck, making outdoor living part of everyday life rather than something separate.
The Result
Standing back and looking at the finished result, it is clear how a well planned door installation can change the way a home works. What once felt closed now feels open. What was once a barrier now invites movement. This is what a thoughtful renovation by an experienced builder delivers. Not just a structural change, but a practical improvement to everyday living.
If you are considering a renovation involving a double brick wall, take the time to plan it properly. Engage the right expertise, follow requirements, and treat the process with care.
