This back kitchen renovation was delivered as part of a larger extension and renovation project on the Mornington Peninsula. As a local Mornington Builder, we worked closely with the homeowners to rethink how space was used at the rear of the house. An underperforming corridor leading to the outside was removed and absorbed into the layout, allowing us to create a dedicated back kitchen or scullery that feels purposeful, calm, and highly practical. The result is a featured kitchen zone that supports daily life without competing with the main kitchen space in the home.
Smart use of space
By removing the hallway, we gained enough space to design a back kitchen. Tall cabinets were installed along one wall to maximise vertical storage space, and wall cabinets were added above the worktops to keep them clean and uncluttered.
Design and storage details
The design focused on simplicity and durability. Storage was one of the main priorities. Two full-height cabinets provide a lot of space for groceries and kitchen essentials. The back kitchen also has a built-in oven and dishwasher. A large worktop runs the entire length of the room, offering plenty of space for food preparation.
Finishes
The floor was finished with engineered wood, adding warmth and continuity with the rest of the house. The lighting was kept soft but effective, ensuring comfortable working conditions in the utility room at any time of day. The kitchen renovation proves how powerful small changes in layout can be. What was once a narrow passageway is now a highly functional back kitchen that adds real value to the home.
The renovation of this back kitchen has changed the everyday functionality of the home. It supports the main kitchen, improves storage and makes the most of the available space.
