This project focused on converting a large garden shed, previously used as a barn, into a spacious room. Measuring 5 metres wide and 10 metres long, the existing structure added real value to the home.
Garden shed structure
The original garage structure was sturdy and well suited for renovation. The outer shell remained unchanged, and the metal walls and roof were retained. Keeping the structure unchanged helped to reduce costs and preserve the original character of the building.
Transformation
To transform the shed into a room, three wooden windows with awnings were installed along one wall. These windows provide natural light and improve ventilation throughout the room. The main entrance was upgraded to a double wooden door with glazing, creating a cosy connection between the house and the new room. Sliding doors were also installed on the outside, providing a unique design nod to the stable’s past life.
Internal framing work
Inside the converted garage, a new internal wooden frame was constructed for finishing. Thermal insulation was installed on all walls and ceilings. Proper insulation allows the space to remain cooler in summer and warmer in winter, making it suitable for everyday use.
Wall and ceiling finishing
Plasterboard was installed on all interior walls and ceilings, replacing the rough surfaces of the shed with clean and smooth ones. This step marked a significant change in the garage space into a full-fledged room separate from the house.
Floor upgrade
As part of the renovation, the floor was completely redone. New structural panels were installed before laying the laminate flooring. For durability, comfort and a modern look that is suitable for a living room, shed office or creative space.
Installation of climate control
A split system was installed for heating and cooling. Combined with complete insulation, this ensures a comfortable temperature in the room throughout the year.
Finished room in the barn
After completion, the former barn has been transformed into a large multipurpose room that can serve a variety of functions. This type of garage conversion is ideal for homeowners on the Mornington Peninsula who want to expand their living space without altering the main structure of their home.
