When we first rolled up to this Patterson Lakes property, it looked like plenty of Melbourne homes do a big double garage and workshop full of tools, storage. We worked with the homeowners to reimagine what this area could become. Instead of two cars sitting under a roof, we saw a proper studio, bright, open, and completely connected to the rest of the home. As a builder and renovator, that is the kind of transformation that gets you excited.
Garage Conversion Structure
The shell of the garage was solid, which made the Garage Conversion much smoother from a construction point of view. We framed out the space properly, insulated the walls, and installed large sliding doors across the front. In the construction stage you can see the protective film still on the glass and the house wrapped up like it is wearing a raincoat. It does not look pretty at that point, but that is where all the important work happens.
One of the key features of this project was creating two separate access points. There is now an entrance directly from the street, perfect for clients or visitors, and another internal door that connects straight into the house. That means the room feels private when needed but still part of the home. That flexibility is exactly what makes a Garage Conversion so valuable.
The final image shows a spacious room of roughly 40 square metres, filled with natural light from the floor to ceiling windows. The timber flooring is warm, clean, and professional, while the crisp white walls make the space feel bigger and calmer. The high ceiling and recessed lighting give it that polished, modern studio vibe rather than anything that resembles a converted shed.
You can easily imagine this room as an art studio, a creative workspace, or even a business space. That is the beauty of a well planned Garage Conversion.
Why this matters for local homes
In areas like Patterson Lakes, Carrum, Seaford, Bonbeach, Chelsea, Aspendale, many properties have garages just like this one. Instead of building out or moving, converting existing space can be a smarter, more cost effective way to gain real square metres. As Segalbuild, we see these projects as some of the most practical upgrades a home can have.
